Contemporary painting was always about finding provocation and drama. The paintings of seascapes by Nicholas Chistiakov are both - eternal scenes of nature and contemporary images. This effect is achieved because of the artist's contemporary technique and his post-minimal take on compositions. Yet the subject is beyond the time and only consists of the images of various states of water and skies without any signs of inhabitants. Dark gray, silver, greenish-gray, whites are often dominant in the color schemes. Artist uses smooth brushstrokes of paint to create stunning and epic images of nature. His compositions are well balanced and often represent provocative plays of light and shadow. The seascapes are often dramatic scenes which make you think about relationships between human and nature, life and death, relationship where humans are only given a short period of time to dominate and live, and afterwards, the nature will erase and hide all signs of human activity beneath the earth and the sea.
